The recent death of legendary Broadway star Carol Channing got us to thinking about how many “stars” from other show business mediums never made it on the Big Screen.
Let’s start with Channing
Then there’s Merman
Then there’s Martin
Then there’s Berle
All Show Biz Legends, but none achieved real MOVIE STARDOM.
Legends CHANNING, MERMAN, MARTIN and BERLE may not have become stars in the movies…
But more Americans tuned-in each week to watch Milton BERLE on TV for free, than ever went to see the movies of Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, Kirk Douglas,John Wayne and alike.
As for Carol CHANNING… She was bitterly disappointed that she didn’t get to star in the movie version of HELLO DOLLY, but she made the role forever legendary on Broadway, much more than Barbra Streisand ever could on screen.
CHANNING along with Ethel MERMAN and Mary MARTIN were Broadway royalty, not to mention always popular on television.
It was kind of of an odd redundant topic for Joe & Frank today, specially when there are scores of classic movie topics that NEVER get mentioned on here…
HOLLYWOOD Classic – Movie Music and composers
Production designers
Matte paintings
Costume designers
Title & Poster designers
Stunt legends
Iconic movie locations (I contributed that recently)
Studio histories
Movie moguls
Classic movie palaces
to name just a few…
Why are WESTERNS very rarely mentioned?
And why don’t other ‘readers’ speak up and give the “guys” some kind of encouragement, some sign that they’re interested here?
