As we mentioned in our March 4 blog — Is It WE KNOW ‘EM ALL (Or) WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE — we invited several fictional characters to a dinner party and asked you, our faithful readers, to guess which movie they inhabited and which star portrayed them.
Hello, everybody. MR. Joe Morella and MR. Frank Segers here. MRS. Norman Maine is clearing away the dinner dishes. You all know her as Vicki Lester, but she prefers to be a martyr. (Normally we clear our own dishes, thank you very much.)
So let’s get to it. Here are the stars names and movie titles involving those festive fictional diners we invited:
Of course George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) and Mary Hatch (Donna Reed) did lead (It’s) A Wonderful Life.
Wall Street’s Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) and Broadway’s (The Producers) Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) ate all the appetizers before the Hildy Johnsons (Roz Russell, Pat O’Brien and Jack Lemmon from various versions of The Front Page) even arrived.
Thank goodness Cody Jarrett (James Cagney in White Heat) couldn’t find the address but we heard him shouting something about his mother. Regular reader Patricia Nolan-Hall has something to say about that Cody character:
I don’t want to sit anywhere near “White Heat”s Cody Jarret, especially when he hears the news about Ma.
(Entirely understandable, Patricia.)
Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) DID show up after all, but wouldn’t sing for her supper.
But Sally Bowles (Liza in Cabaret) would stop singing. That is, until Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson of Rebecca fame) threw a wet blanket on the whole affair and the party was over.
It was still a great party seeing all those immortal people.
