A few weeks ago we mentioned various actors who had had two chances to win an Oscar in the same year.
They included oldtimers such as Greta Garbo, Norma Shearer, George Arliss, Maurice Chevalier, Fay Bainter and Barry Fitzgerald.
But we forgot to mention not-so-old-timer Al Pacino.

Pacino won the Best Actor Oscar in 1992 for his performance in “Scent of a Woman.” But he’d also been nominated for Best Supporting Actor that same year for “Glengarry Glen Ross.”
Back in the 30s Fay Bainter had been nominated (like Pacino) for both categories in different films. She won Best Supporting Actress.
In the 40s Barry Fitzgerald had been nominated for both categories for the same film. He won Best Supporting Actor.
Pacino, however, unlike Bainter or Fitzgerald, was always a lead actor, not a character actor who sometimes got to play leads.
In fact before his win he had been nominated SEVEN times. Most notably for his role as Michael Corleone in the Godfather films.
It’s hard to understate his onscreen accomplishments, but somehow we managed to do just that.
