DAVY CROCKETT and CLASSIC MOVIES?

Well, Classic Movie fans, at least.

Hello Everybody.  We’re back again with a photo contributed by one of our readers. Pat Williamson, who a few weeks ago shared a photo of herself with legendary Marlene Dietrich, thought we might like to see this photo of her late husband, Hugh, when he appeared with  Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen in the Disney classic “Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier.”

How many of you still have, or at least remember, your coon skip caps?  Speaking of hats, Pat remembered that the actors had to provide their own wardrobe and Hugh had to go out and shop for his hat.

Thanks Pat.  Always nice to remember.  Say, your husband looked a bit like Gary Cooper, didn’t he?

LAST FRIDAY’S PIC:  That was Gig Young nee Byron Barr. Young is best remembered as the sadistic master of ceremonies in director Sydney Pollack’s Depression-era, marathon-dancing film “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?”  – for which he won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 1969.

The Academy Award somehow didn’t result in the career jolt that Young had hoped for. He appeared in only four films after that in nondescript supporting roles.

Young was obviously a deeply troubled man.  Alcoholism marred his career and his five marriages, especially the last.  Weeks after wedding German actress Kim Schmidt in 1978, Young shot her to death in their New York City apartment, and then fatally shot himself.

We wonder if his life would have turned out better had he lived it as Byron Barr.

SHARING PHOTOS–HERE’S DIETRICH

Hello Everybody.  Joe Morella and Frank Segers here again. And our first posting on Saturday.  We’re committed to coming to you Monday through Friday and hope you’ll look to us each day as you would your favorite columnist.  This week we’re adding a sixth entry.

Today we are thrilled to begin what we hope will be a regular feature of this blog– readers sharing their own personal pix of stars with all of us.  Patricia Williamson of Tucson has generously sent us the above photo of herself with screen legend Marlene Dietrich. The shot was taken at Los Angeles’ Union Station as Marlene was leaving on a tour to sell War Bonds. Pat wasn’t the only one wishing her a “Bon Voyage.” Naturally, Dietrich had a military escort.

In 1943 Pat, then Patricia Nanette Hawkins, fresh out of high school, had been signed up by the Standard Oil Company of California to be a “Chevronette.”  These young women were part of the company’s war effort.  Pat, (who was born on St Patrick’s day when her mother had to leave a production of “No, No, Nanette) and a few other girls were set up in a booth in downtown L.A. and every afternoon at 4:30 a movie star would arrive to help sell war bonds and stamps.

Pat and the other “Chevronettes” were photographed with stars and other dignitaries and the pictures were circulated nationwide.

Thanks for sharing the photo Pat.  It must be great to have such fond memories.
